In the spring of 2010, R J Grondin and Sons was awarded a $5.5 million bid to reconstruct William Clarke Drive. The two year project which was completed in the summer of 2011 consisted of widening the existing roadway to add center turning lanes, an adaptive traffic signal control system, sidewalks, ADA compliant pedestrian crosswalks, and raised granite curbed median with lighting, stamped concrete flatwork, and landscaping. This project was designed to help improve the flow of traffic for the 22,600 vehicles per day through the project, as well as improve pedestrian safety for the neighborhood, while making this main artery an aesthetically appealing and true gateway into Westbrook.
One of the most challenging aspects of this project was the high volume of traffic that passed through the site daily. Add into this the high volume of pedestrian traffic, and our construction activities. At the peak of the job it would not be uncommon to have two pipe operations, several excavation crews and subcontractors at various locations throughout the length of the project. Our MDOT approved traffic plan was constantly amended throughout the project to improve traffic flow while enabling the work to be done efficiently and safely.
