Safety

The safety and wellness of our workforce is taken very seriously at R.J. Grondin & Sons. We have a strong commitment to providing a safe workplace for all of our employees. Our preventive approach provides a safe working environment at our job sites, which keeps projects running smoothly and efficiently, while keeping insurance costs low. We belong to a self-insured Worker Comp group and our Experience Modification Factor has been well below the industry average over the past decade.

When a new employee starts at R.J. Grondin & Sons, they can expect to spend their entire first day going through a hands-on orientation program. The first day on the job is a vital opportunity to ensure that employees are familiar with all company policies and procedures, as well as proper selection of personal protective equipment, use and care of hand and power tools, and job site expectations.

Our current workforce has commented in response to our Safety Orientation, “New workers are arriving on site, prepared to go to work, safety-conscious and productive, day one”.

Safety and training doesn’t stop there. In addition to our orientation program for new employees, workers receive hands-on training in the field. Many of our workers are OSHA 10 and 30 hour trained. Other training includes Work Zone Safety and Awareness, Trenching and Excavation, Defensive Driving, Confined Space, Flagger Certification, and MSHA training for employees working in our pits and quarries.

We have a core of employees trained and certified in compliance with OSHA 1910.120 for hazardous waste operations. We are prepared to immediately deal with any situation that may arise at a job site. There are many other training sessions held throughout the season that deal with site-specific tasks.

R.J. Grondin & Sons will always do our utmost to protect and care for the most valuable asset of the Company, our employees.

Community

Community involvement is a longstanding tradition at R.J. Grondin & Sons. Throughout the past six decades, the company and its team have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to scores of worthwhile causes and benefits including major contributions to the Boy Scouts’ Camp Hinds facilities and to many youth organizations in the Greater Portland Area ranging from the K-12 school system, multiple Regional Technical Centers, the Community College System and the University System.

Besides direct financial support of the many local community schools, organizations and charitable causes, the Grondin Team believes in helping with in-kind services for special projects such as local youth ball field improvements as well as various Eagle Scout projects in Southern Maine.  Recently, we donated various materials for the Camp Hinds new dining hall in Raymond as well as other infrastructure improvements.  In fact, R.J. Grondin & Sons received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Pine Tree Council in 2019 which is the highest award a council can give to an organization for their contributions.

The spirit of giving quietly extends throughout the company as individuals from all levels in the organization support their local communities by unselfishly volunteering as coaches for various youth sports teams and youth program leaders, or by serving on the boards at the local Rotary Club, town planning boards as well as participating on various advisory committees at local high schools and community colleges.

Environment

R.J. Grondin & Sons believes in maintaining a healthy environment to work and live in, for ourselves and for the generations to come. The law mandates part of what we do, and we comply with local, state and federal regulations on our projects. However, we often go above and beyond what is necessary to help keep our part of the world a cleaner place.

Some of the things we do to help the environment include:

  • We have built and designed wetland mitigation and habitat preservation projects, providing wetlands compensation opportunities to development projects throughout the Greater Portland Region.
  • We upgraded the heating and cooling systems in our main office to high-efficiency heat pumps
  • We have worked with Efficiency Maine to update most of our light fixtures in our maintenance shop and main office to reduce our energy consumption on a daily basis.
  • We recycling asphalt and concrete to reuse in roadways, parking lots and driveways instead of unnecessarily taking up space in landfills.
  • Grinding stumps into an erosion control mix to prevent erosion on various projects, which is a natural alternative to using petroleum-based silt fence.
  • Producing aggregates onsite whenever possible to minimize trucking materials from other locations, thus reducing fossil fuel consumption as well as minimizing usage of virgin aggregate materials.
  • Reclaiming old pits and quarries into sites for homes, fields, ponds, wetlands and other uses that contribute to the community.
  • Washing equipment with an oil/water separator for cleaning grease and oils that cleans the run-off and protects the watershed.
  • Heating our maintenance building with radiant heat to minimize energy usage and maximize efficiency.
